Background Information and Highlights
Many couples choose the popular Thames riverside location of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Caversham Reading Berkshire for their wedding ceremony and reception.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel Reading is to be found just a short distance north of the town centre and is therefore easily reached from junctions 10 and 11 of the M4 motorway and from the mainline railway and coach stations. The hotel has plenty of its own onsite secure parking.
The exterior has a small well kept garden suitable for formal wedding photos, and just a short walk away are meadows bordering the River Thames and of course the elegant Caversham Bridge. There is always a lot of wildlife in attendance including swans and canada geese. The interior has a roomy sophisticated vibe.
The registrars responsible for wedding and civil partnerships at the Crowne Plaza Reading are from the local Reading Register Office and they are a pleasure to work with - no awkward restrictions on professional photography and video during the ceremony. As with most offices they do ask that guests refrain from shooting their own photos whilst the ceremony is underway (there is an opportunity at the end).
You'll see that some of the photos have a watermark "4k video". This means that some parts of that day were shot by Peter in 4k ultra high definition (UHD) video and photos made from these video files. For the techies: the video file dimensions are 4096px x 2160px and therefore the photos can be up to 13.6" x 7.2" at 300ppi (300ppi being the accepted best quality for physical prints). These can of course be cropped to other aspect ratios such as 9:6 and 10:8. The video frame rate is 25 frames per second - meaning 25 possible photos per second! The main downsides though include 1) the ambient light must be reasonably high as video files are not nearly as malleable as original RAW photo files 2) the best shutter speed for video is 1/50th but that is too slow for photo compositions involving subject movement 3) Some fill-flash usually enhances the results of photos but that is not possible with video. Therefore Peter usually shoots both video and photos at the same time using separate cameras.

There are swans and Canada Geese galore beside the river
And some of the swans can be quite demanding!
The next photo above shows the Crowne Plaza Hotel as seen from the front with the main entrance. There is plenty of parking in the private car park just to the left from the camera’s position. You do need a code from the hotel reception to exit

Some brides and grooms choose to have their marriage ceremony at the local Reading Registry Office or at a local church before moving to the hotel for the reception. This photo shows this couple enjoying the confetti shower thrown over them by their guests after their Registry Office ceremony
This couple chose St Michaels Church Tilehurst for their ceremony
This couple had their wedding ceremony at Greenlands in Henley - which is also the home of the World-famous Henley Business School. After their ceremony and reception at Greenlands they took a riverboat with the guests to sail to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Caversham
Many brides like to have their photography coverage start with the girls getting ready, be it at home or at the hotel. Details photos of the shoes, dresses, jewellery, bouquets etc are always popular additions to a wedding album
Some fun photos and semi-posed photos are great!
It is important to have a few semi-formal photos of the groom and his entourage at the start of the wedding day

The “cocktail hour” - which is the period from the end of the ceremony to the start of the wedding breakfast - is full of great photo and video opportunities!
This bride and groom took their guests on a riverboat cruise on the River Thames after their reception
Most brides and grooms prefer to have most of their day photographed in a candid or “reportage” style but with a selection of more formal and semi-posed photos in a short photoshoot period usually in the afternoon
Caversham Bridge is just a few yards away from the Crowne Plaza Hotel so it is an easy walk and there are lots of good backdrops for your wedding photos
We popped over to Caversham Bridge again in the evening to take advantage of the lovely sunset in the background
The private gardens adjacent to the hotel are a good location for some portraits and group photos. The mature trees can offer some shade, which is important for photography if the sun is very bright - otherwise complexions in bright direct sunlight can be very contrasty and less than appealing regardless of how much editing is done afterwards
The steps outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel Caversham Reading are a great position to use to shoot big group photos ensuring that everyone can be seen
We can go along the riverbank in the opposite direction to the bridge for a few hundred yards past the rowing club for yet more great locations for wedding photos
If we are to shoot some group photos in the evening or if the weather is less than ideal Peter can set up positions complete with off-camera lighting within the hotel

Amazing wedding cake!
The speeches during the wedding breakfast are a terrific photo opportunity. And video coverage is even better!
The cutting of the wedding cake is a must-have moment to photograph and video
The first dance and lots more dancing is also magic for photography and video
