The Retreat At Elcot Park, a delightful wedding venue on the outskirts of Newbury Berkshire
Background Information and Highlights
The Retreat At Elcot Park, is a luxury boutique hotel which has recently been redesigned and refurbished. It was formerly known as the Mercure Newbury Elcot Park Hotel. It enjoys an enviable quiet rural location just to the west of Newbury Berkshire. It is easily reached from the nearby main junction of the M4 motorway with the A34. It has lots of free onsite car parking.
There are extensive mature gardens and some terrific backdrops inside the building so there are plenty of opportunities for varied locations for photos.
The selection of photos on this page - all shot by Peter - feature several weddings from before the recent refurb. He will update the gallery in due course. Meanwhile you can also browse some further information in Vogue magazine.
See lots more wedding photo galleries including e.g. Peter’s Old Mill Aldermaston, Peter’s Roseate Hotel, Peter’s Sandford Springs Hotel, Peter’s Combe Manor, Peter’s Our Lady & St Johns Church Goring, Peter’s Shaw House Register Office Newbury, Peter’s Hungerford Town Hall, Peter’s Oakley Hall Hotel, Peter’s Elvetham Hotel, Peter’s Esseborne Manor, Peter’s Wokefield Estate Hotel, and many more.

The first photo above illustrates the main function room at The Retreat at Elcot Park Hotel Newbury set up ready for the wedding ceremony.
And the next photo shows another wedding ceremony set up in the Elcot Park’s function room. It is a large room that can be set up with dividers to accommodate lower numbers of guests
The next image above is a wedding album double page spread designed for this couple by Peter. The bride and groom chose a white leather album
Another wedding album double page spread illustrating the speeches in full swing at the Elcot Park Hotel
Photo coverage usually starts with the girls getting ready plus some detail shots the the bouquets, jewellery, shoes, dresses, etc
Vintage wedding limousines are a very popular choice
Some brides get ready at home especially if it is just a short trip to the wedding venue
Others prefer to get ready at the hotel. The flower girls bridesmaids and pageboys always make for great photo memories throughout the day
It is always good to have some semi-formal and fun photos of the groom with the groomsmen just before the ceremony. The soldier was with The Rifles (Regiment), formerly called the Royal Green Jackets. Previously it had been the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) raised in America in 1756. Peter’s dad had been a latter day member of the KRRC and Peter would have liked to chat but often weddings are far too busy to break away from the photography and video work
Some couples choose to have their wedding ceremony in their local church. This bride and groom were married at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in the centre of Newbury
And this couple chose St James Church Leckhampstead just North of Newbury for their wedding
Most of the civil weddings registration staff who work at the Elcot Park Hotel are pretty easy-going so seldom are there any serious restrictions on professional photography and video
Signing the civil marriage register is usually a must-have photo. In practice it is not normally allowed that photography and video be shot during the real signing. The staff usually set up a pretend signing shortly afterwards and also invite the guests to take their own photos
The grounds around The Retreat at Elcot Park Hotel Newbury are extensive and beautiful
Some beers during the “cocktail hour” between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast
The little people always make for great portraits!
This wedding featured rain for much of the day. The next photo above shows the groom with his mates grabbing a cigarette under cover
The stone steps at the rear of the hotel are a good position from which to shoot some of the large group photos. The extra height enables everyone to be seen
There are some very nice mature gardens hidden away to the left of the front of the hotel
“Reportage” style photography which is candid and informal is very popular. However most couples like to include a selection of more traditional and semi-formal photos especially if they are to have a wedding album
Main function room at The Retreat at Elcot Park Hotel Newbury set up ready for the wedding breakfast and reception
The speeches during the wedding breakfast are a terrific photo opportunity and even more so for video
The cutting of the wedding cake is another must-have moment
The first dance followed by lots more dancing during the evening are great photo and video opportunities!
The stag party members got together for a group photo later in the evening
A photo of The Retreat at Elcot Park Hotel Newbury in the late evening is a great shot to have at the end of your wedding album pages
